The Poem

Raised by the tides,
she learned to ebb and flow,
but there are no mirrors in the sea,
so she never knew how bright she glowed.

A mermaid is someone special,
some say each scale is handpicked by the angels
to build her magnificent tail.

When the mermaid met the sailor,
he cast his net too wide,
the sailor knew her worth,
she took his prods and hooks in stride.

Then something caught her eye,
on that frightful sailor’s boat,
a glowing tower of handpicked scales,
the mermaid’s reflected self,
though maybe beaten,
and maybe bruised,
screamed of innate worth.

The mermaid fought
with all she had,
and she left that sailor
far in her past.

Many moons later,
this mermaid swims free,
she sees her reflection
in her own reclaimed identity.

Now let me tell you a secret,
that mermaid

is me.
